'Armadillo' to Open New Headquarters

By Don McKinney Amusements Editor

There must come a new day for all good armadillos, and perhaps the sun is rising on that day for Armadillo Productions. Jim Franklin, spokesman for the group and chief armadillo designer, announced there wll be a grand opening of Armadillo World Headquarters Friday and Saturday at 525 1/2 Barton Springs Road. The new enterprise will feature dancing and music by local as well as out-of-state bands. The opener will feature Shiva's Headband, Hub City Movers and Whistler. The gate price for the first weekend will be $2 per person pre-sale and $3 at the door. After the opening, Franklin said, the gate price regularly will be $2. The site of the nightspot holds an interesting history. The Barton Springs building has housed an army-navy surplus store and a National Guard armory. In earlier days than this, the place was a dance club that featured such notables as Elvis Presley when he was still recording for Sun label. Frequenting the same place was Johnny Cash, also an ex-Sun label man, who did a mimic act of Presley's show. It seems only fitting that with this type of history that the building should now house the first Armadillo Headquarters. Franklin said the place is large with a stage already built into the wall, with office space for most of the other parts of Armadillo Productions. He said that in some of the smaller office rooms they might set up an environmental light show or perhaps an art gallery, He said also that they plan to have drama productions as well as dancing, or anything else they feel the community might be interested in. The headquarters will feature music and dancing every Summer Series weekend with probably three bands on the bill, he said. During the week, the building will be open for plays or art showings lf they are available. There will be no alcoholic beverages served, but other concessions will be available, according to Franklin. After the demise of the Vulcan Gas Co., perhaps this new place will fill the vacuum.
