Based on notes in Hugh Sauer's scrapbook, this photo was taken in January 1894, (and thus belongs in the 1800s directory, not the 1900s). This is the Pontius residence, 2282 State Road 503, Lewisburg, OH 45338, built in 1876, about 2 1/2 miles north of West Alexandria. My grandmother, Lucy Nancy Pontius Sauer, was born at this house in 1877. In front of the fence, are her brother Clyde on the left and her brother John on the right. In front of the horse are her parents, Levi and Mary Pontius. Hugh's notes do not identify which of the remaining women is Lucy, but assuming she was 16 when this photo was taken, I assume she is next to her mother. Ralph Pontius still lives in this house, as of this writing. CHS January 14, 2005.
